A brag page
Richard White, owner of the two Soft as a Grape stores on Martha’s Vineyard, went into the book business today when he began showing and displaying Vineyard Stories’ books in his store on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs. He also plans to carry books in his Edgartown store. Soft as a Grape manufactures its signature clothing in Wareham — locally grown, just like Vineyard Stories. Read More
Looking through closed windows
Years ago when I lived in Alexandria, Virginia, on one of the cobblestone streets, I found I had to get used to having people peer in the windows of my quaint, 12-foot-wide row house. It was one of those white houses with black shutters, built when the city was first settled in the 1700s. It was on a lovely tree-lined street just a block from the harbor, had a tiny back garden sheltered by a high wooden fence, and two windows facing the street. If... Read More
After the storm
When storms roll in this time of year, Vineyarders get to thinking not about whether their roofs will hold up or their trees will fall. Optimistically, we figure we’ve already been through that once or twice, so what the heck? Instead, we think about what the sea will bring us. Like scallops. If you’re a dedicated Vineyarder who has in mind a healthy profit, you’ll get to the best beaches by dawn. I’d been sort of invited to meet a friend... Read More
“I respect the island.”: A guest blog
Race Day, Edgartown Yacht Club My name is Alan Muney, and I am a summer person. Sort of. I know that summer people are viewed as pushy and unappreciative of all that Vineyarders cherish about the island. In my own defense, I try my best to understand the different rhythms of the island; its natural beauty, the roundabout vs. blinker arguments, the need to buy local. I, too, cringe when that pushy person flares up while in the checkout line... Read More
God visits the Vineyard: A guest photo
This is one of Morning Glory’s fields, which at this time of year has become a pumpkin patch. Maybe I just never walk down this road in the fall, but it was a complete surprise to come across it the other evening, just at the perfect time of day with the fall skies of the Vineyard making the scene all the more spectacular. I always say that the day after Labor Day is when God comes to the Vineyard for three weeks (at least). This was surely... Read More
A style renegade
Please forgive me for what I’m about to write. It’s totally self-absorbed. It’s the kind of thing I hate. Despite that, I cannot help myself. While I live in pristine, beautiful Edgartown, my house is on the outskirts, set off the road and back into the woods. It can’t be seen from the street. It feels quite secluded, although I can see other houses when the trees lose their leaves. Mine is a community of trees and split rail fences.... Read More
What I see from my bike
A Guest Blog from Writer (and Rider) Nis Kildegaard: Three or four times each week, I strap on my helmet, slip on the fingerless gloves and head out for a 26-mile bicycling spin around the Island. My route almost never changes, but I don’t need new terrain for variety – the weather, the changing seasons, and my fellow users of the paths provide plenty of that. It’s been said that you can’t step into the same river twice. In this sense, the... Read More
When the sea and men are one
The Edgartown Harbor from waterside It’s no surprise that the history of the Vineyard is filled with adventures of the sea. There have been pirates and shipwrecks, rum running, war, natural disasters, whaling captains and their widows – for such a small place, the Vineyard seems to have seen it all. I carry a notepad around with me jotting down names of potential books about the sea; truthfully, though, I should probably just shut up and read... Read More
